John S. Sinclair

John S. Sinclair served as the fourth leader of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia from 1936 to 1941.
Sinclair was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1897. After serving as a second lieutenant in the US Army during World War I, he attended Columbia University Law School in New York City. Upon graduating, he joined the Philadelphia law firm of Williams & Sinkler in 1922.
While still in private practice, Sinclair joined the Philadelphia Fed as associate counsel in the early 1930s. In January 1934, he left the law firm to become the Reserve Bank’s deputy governor. Two years later, he assumed the role of president.
Sinclair resigned as head of the Philadelphia Fed in March 1941 to become a vice president of New York Life Insurance Co. The following year he was elected as a director and appointed executive vice president of the company.
Sinclair died in 1972.
